Maundy Thursday

Today is Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday is the day during Holy Week that commemorates the Washing of the Feet and Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles, as described in the canonical gospels. It is the fifth day of Holy Week, preceded by Holy Wednesday and followed by Good Friday.

In the UK the monarch tradionally hands out Maundy money - originally to the poor and deserving, and most often to pensioners.

This year, the service will be held at the York Minster cathedral with The King and Queen Consort.

The King will present 74 men and 74 women - signifying the age of the Monarch - with a Maundy gift and thank them for their "Christian service" and their help in local communities.
