Today is the National Day of Catalunya. Today is known as the 'Festa Nacional de Catalunya' and marks September 11th 1714 when Catalan forces were defeated by King Philip V of Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession. This war came about when Carlos II of Spain died heirless and willed the crown to France, which was contested by England and the Austria-Hungary alliance.
