Today is Catalunya Day, and a holiday here in Catalunya.
Today is known as the 'Festa Nacional de Catalunya' and marks September 11th 1714 when Catalan forces were defeated by King Philip V of Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession. This war came about when Carlos II of Spain died heirless and willed the crown to France, which was contested by England and the Austria-Hungary alliance.
Ok so history lesson for today over. 😉😉
Celebrations this year are likely to be muted, although in the past we have often seen separatist demonstrations, but whatever happens Catalans will be flying the Catalan flag from their homes.
The origin of this flag is steeped in legend too, and I'll share that with you in the coming days....
