Ash Wednesday

So, according to the Christian calendar today is Ash Wednesday.

Traditionally ashes were used as a sign if penitence, and in some churches the sign of the cross is made in the forehead during services today. I remember walking from primary school to church with a twig from an Ash tree, but don't think our church did the ashy cross thing.

Here dimecres de Cendra is the final day of carnval and bizarre is the Day to bury the sardine - basically the king of the year's Carnaval, making way for a new one next year. Normally there would be a funereal procession followed by speeches in the Placa de la Vila. This year the speeches will be televised.

A photo from the days when we had to use a camera.
