Although there have been plenty of events building up to Carnaval today was the first official day.  

In explaining the difference between the Carnaval in Sitges and Vilanova I said that for me the Vilanova Carnaval is by the people for the people, whereas Sitges is by the town for tourists and spectators.  IMO.

Today was Meringada.  A giant battle in the market square with meringue mixture.  It's wold and fun,  and very very messy.  Even watching from the sidelines we were hit by the occasional glob of meringue mix,  sticky and sweet.  

The Meringada is a long-standing tradition,  started at one of the town's best bakeries.
