Vilanova i la Geltru
Vilanova i la Geltrú is a beautful coastal city in the province of Barcelona, Catalunya, and the capital of the Garraf region. Historically it was a fishing port, which still features highly in the city's gastronomy. The city has an expanding population of approximately 66,000, and is situated 40 km south-west of Barcelona, with the slightly more famous coastal resort of Sitges some 10 km to the north-east.
Sandwiched between the beguiling mountains of the Garraf Natural Park, and the inviting Mediterranean Sea Vilanova i la Geltru is a city of great divergence.
The traditional and popular festivals (festes) celebrated in Vilanova i la Geltrú are among the richest and most varied in Catalunya, and occur throughout the year. Locals are believed to say that Vilanovins "always have a leg in the air" referring to their festive proclivity.
From the four golden beaches to the shops, bars and cafes on what is claimed to be the longest Rambla in Catalunya there is always something to take your interest. Vilanova i la Geltru is a thriving market town, well served by international chains, local stores and the municipal markets. There are museums, churches, monuments and the local Castle all with interesting stories to share.
Slightly further afield in the wild and beautiful local countryside you can follow well marked walking or cycle trails through the Garraf park or along the stunning coastline or if you'd prefer scale the heights of the local mountains.
Vilanova i la Geltrú is easily accesible by car, train and plane.
BARCELONA EL PRAT AIRPORT
Vilanova i la Geltru is just 40kms from Barcelona El Prat Airport. The airport is to the North of the city. From here there are regular train and bus services throughout the day, and a night bus service. The train journey along the delightful Catalan coast is between 35 - 50 minutes (changing at El Prat de LLobregat). The direct bus service takes slightly longer, taking a more circuitous but just as scenic route.
Reus airport is approximately 55kms from Vilanova i la Geltru and lies to the south of the city, near Tarragona. It is also served by train and bus routes, but none of these are direct to Vilanova i la Geltru.
Please note taxi services operate from both airports but are quite prohibitive in price, partly due to the motorway tolls incurred in either direction.
Vilanova is directly on the C31, and bordered by the C32, which are both major roads, and in part Motorways, coming into the city. The Ap7 Motorway connects directly with these roads. Road links are excellent from all parts of Spain.
Like most cities car parking is always at a premium, but there are some free spaces within easy walking distance of the apartment.
With prior notice we are able to provide a collection and drop off service to and from both airports. (at an additional cost).
Within the city there is an excellent local bus service, with bus stops close to the apartment.
The train Station (and bus terminus) is just five minutes walk away, with regular service up and down the coast to Barcelona, Tarragona, and all stops in between, and of course to Port Aventura.
